The success of emerging technologies often hinges on the development of application scenarios and the selection of effective business models. My deep interest in the commercialization of technology-driven innovations might stem from my father's role as a professor overseeing innovation at a university.
During the epidemic, I was introduced to optical interaction technology. I had known about visible light communication technology for some time, but it was during the epidemic that its potential truly came to light. My father utilized this technology in the Huo-Yan Air Laboratory, employing it for code transmission as a means of communication between smart devices. Given the popularity of smartphone scanning technology in China, this novel approach was still in its infancy, requiring both inventive design and practical application scenarios for further development.
I often assess these emerging technologies based on fundamental principles like efficiency and energy conservation. They may be niche and in the early stages compared to other technologies, but their advanced nature fascinates me. I enjoy imagining the potential applications and marketing strategies for these technologies, considering both their practical uses and the business models that could drive their development.
I believe that such niche technologies should initially be implemented in controlled environments rather than being released to the mass consumer market. For instance, in China, where elementary schools prohibit cell phones, these technologies could be integrated into wearable smart devices like rings, school badges, buttons, and accessories. To expedite their adoption, these devices should not be a financial burden on schools or parents. Instead, they could be linked with parents' cell phones and offered by telecom carriers, who could cover the hardware costs through monthly subscription fees, thereby expanding their customer base.
This concept led me to form a team for the Cross-Strait Creator Competition, where we were awarded first prize.
